We have never seen anything like the Pinarello Bolide F HR 3D. This frame was designed specifically to help Filippo Ganna on his attempt to set the hour world record. Ganna and the Bolide succeeded in breaking that world record, traveling a staggering 56.792 kilometers in one hour. In addition to Ganna’s incredible riding, this was done thanks to the revolutionary aerodynamics and stiffness of the Bolide F HR 3D Frameset. This frame is unique in every way including a new material, a new standard for aerodynamics, and a more accurate fit than ever seen in the industry. Each Bolide F HR 3D is 3D printed specifically to help its user go as fast as possible.

The production method of the Bolide F HR 3D is a huge driver to its success. Each frame is 3D printed specifically for the rider that ordered it. This allows Pinarello to dial in every measurement of the bike to the millimeter. The words “custom fit” have never applied the way they do to this frame. It is printed with a new alloy called Scalmalloy which is a high-strength hybrid of scandium, aluminum, and magnesium. Scalmalloy is designed specifically for 3D printing use and is used often in the aerospace industry. All of this helps Pinarello create a frame that fits your body’s exact proportions.

Having such a specific printing process also allowed Pinarello to enhance aerodynamics to a new level. Much of that drag reduction can be attributed to a redesigned seat tube and seatpost. The seat tube and seatpost typically account for about 40 percent of the aero drag of a frame and fork. Pinarello researched humpback whales and found that the protrusions on the front of their flippers significantly aided their ability to reduce drag. Similar ridges were found to be effective on a bike, generating a mini vortex between bumps, causing airflow behind the peaks to stay attached and flow more smoothly. This all reduces the amount of wind dispersion you are required to fight through.

A special airfoil section is designed to reduce as much of the frontal area as possible. This takes full advantage of the removal of the UCI 3:1 rule, cranking up the aero efficiency even further. The wheel hubs and bottom bracket have been made narrower than normal, creating substantial gains. The bottom bracket was narrowed from 70mm to 54mm while the hub went from 120mm to 89mm on the rear and 100mm to 69mm on the front.
